Exercise to Increase Lungs’ Air Space
This breathing exercise helps you make use of your lungs’ maximum breathing capacity in a comfortable and gentle manner. Practice several times a day for more energy and fitness on the job and at home.
While standing, knees relaxed, bend over and exhale completely all the old stale air. You can help your lungs expel (push out) the air by pulling in your belly muscles, forcing your stomach inwards towards your spine. Now stand straight, slowly inhale, filling your lungs to full capacity and hold your breath for 20 seconds (if 20 seconds is not possible, set a challenging, non-painful goal). As you count, slowly stretch your arms up over your head.
This will stretch your lungs, maximizing their air space. When you have completed your breath holding pattern, relax and bend down and exhale air slowly. Do this 2 or 3 more times and increase as desired.
