In pristine Minnesota, your water might be dangerously contaminated from upstream paper pulp mills. On beautiful New Guinea beaches, you might have to step around hazardous garbage carried great distances by ocean tides. Toxic waste by-products from oil production are everywhere in Middle East deserts.

Today we fortunately have national and local agencies whose job is to prevent such horrible disasters. They constantly monitor air pollutant levels and atmospheric conditions. Based on their findings, stronger guidelines and legislation will likely be implemented to protect our health. However problems do persist. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notes that the number of Americans living in areas that don’t meet air quality standards “was as of 1998 over 120 million.” Over 64 urban areas don’t meet federal standards of air quality – standards which many say are not safe enough to keep our air healthy!

According to an EPA study in 1998, the Clean Air Act cost Americans about half-a-trillion dollars and provided a benefit of $21.5 trillion. Benefits were looked at for a number of factors, including improved public health and avoided food crop damage. If the Clean Air Act had not been enacted by 1990, 205,000 Americans would have died prematurely and millions more would have suffered from respiratory illnesses ranging from mild to severe.
