Breathing Exercise for Lower Lungs
The lungs’ lower regions are the most distant from your windpipe, and the most dependent on the breathing activity of the diaphragm. As a result, the lungs’ lower regions are the most likely areas to suffer disuse. This exercise is designed to bring air to these underused areas of the lungs.
While lying on the floor on an exercise/stretching pad concentrate on your lower lungs. Put tip of index finger just below your belly button and consider this spot the center of your lower lungs. Slowly inhale through the nose a full and total breath, concentrating on filling the lung area beneath your finger first. With practice you will soon find that you can easily target your breathing in this way. As you inhale fill your lower lungs first (beneath finger), moving to your familiar upper lungs last.
Exercise, exercise your powers; what is difficult will finally become routine.
– George C. Lichtenberg
After a few days of practice your skill level in this exercise will noticeably increase and you will find it easy to aim your breathing to different regions of your lungs. Once you have this ability, practice this exercise while standing or lying down, at home or at work. You will find that it is both soothing and invigorating, suitable both for before sleep and for energy when tired.
